Belmullet - On Fire

Sunset - it's a special time of the day, the fading of light, for some pure romance, for others the doorway to the dark side of life. The time, where we may think about the day that is gone and the day that will come. Or, as an Irish song goes: "I'll put cares off, tomorrow can wait, till this day is done."

Belmullet - Feeling blue

Every sunset brings the promise
of a new dawn

Belmullet - Rosy touch

If I can put one touch of rosy sunset
into the life of any man or woman,
I shall feel that I have worked with God.
Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874-1936)

Belmullet - Rest

Live this day, and everyday,
as if it all may end at sunset,
and when your head hits the pillow, rest,
knowing that you have done your best.
Larry James

Belmullet - Clouds

May there be just enough clouds on your horizon
to cause a beautiful sunset.
Irish blessing

Belmullet - Gone

I once saw a sunset, bright red, orange and gold.
Streaming down from the sky, 'Twas beautiful to behold.
It's rays' they went upwards, outwards and down.
Like strings of golden thread, hanging down to the ground.
It gently slipped away, beneath the golden sea.
It's beauty, all gone, but it's image I still see.
Katie Murphy

Belmullet - Timetable

It's nice to know the exact time of sunset and sunrise for the case, that clouds don't allow to see the sun kissing the ocean. A very useful calendar is offered by Time and Date, worldwide online - information ( and of course Dublin in particular ) about day - and nighttimes.

Belmullet - Weather Forecast

Evening red and morning grey will set the traveller on his way; but evening grey and morning red will bring down rain upon his head.
The evening red and morning grey are sure signs of a fine day, but the evening grey and the morning red, makes the sailor shake his head.

Glengariff - Sky's Daydream

Unnoticed, the waves have lost their liquidness
and broken into planes of pastel light.
The sky's daydream is ending, and the gulls
have left it long ago.
A little later,
the water melts to barely glinting slate
as our wake fades smoothly into darkness.
The sails no longer even luff,
and at last are furled.
Philip Hart

Glengariff - Peace

Hush hush time to be sleeping
Hush hush, dreams come acreeping
Dreams of peace and of freedom
so smile in your sleep, bonnie baby.
Jim McLean

Glengariff - Lullaby

As the golden sun sinks, behind purple hills,
And the sky is streaked with shades of red,
And all the world is deathly still,
For the sun is going to bed.
The sun is a paintbrush, the earth a canvas,
And Gods painting the evening sky
And all the trees in the forest below,
Are humming a sweet lullaby.
Caoimhe Creed

Renvyle - Time

In the old Celtic calendar the old year dies with sunset on October 31st but the New Year does not start until sunrise on November 1st. The night between sunset and sunrise was a time, when time nor indeed date and place had any meaning. It was a time when past and present and also future came together. A magical moment of non-existence. It shines through every sunset in any place of the world, but for me Ireland has by far the most magical sunsets. And living the day gets a new meaning - like a stone that splashes the water and creates a picture of a second, that will never come again.

Renvyle - Coming Night

The rich fire of the orange sunset
gloriously announces the coming night.

Spanish Point - Footprints

One night a man dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. In each scene he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand – one belonging to him and the other to the Lord. When the last scene was flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints and noticed that many times along the path there was only one set of footprints in the sand. He also noted that it happened during the lowest, saddest times in his life.

Spanish Point - Lonesome?

This bothered him and he questioned the Lord: "Lord, you said you would walk beside me all the way. But I noticed that during the most troublesome times of my life, there was only one set of footprints. I don’t understand why, when I needed you most, you deserted me." The Lord replied, "My precious child, I love you and would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering when you saw only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.

The Little Prince - Chapter 6
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Oh, little prince! Bit by bit I came to understand the secrets of your sad little life. For a long time you had found your only entertainment in the quiet pleasure of looking at the sunset. I learned that new detail on the morning of the fourth day, when you said to me:
"I am very fond of sunsets. Come, let us go look at a sunset now."
"But we must wait," I said.
"Wait? For what?"
"For the sunset. We must wait until it is time."
At first you seemed to be very much surprised. And then you laughed to yourself. You said to me:
"I am always thinking that I am at home!"
Just so. Everybody knows that when it is noon in the United States the sun is setting over France. If you could fly to France in one minute...

Spanish Point - 44 Sunsets could go straight into the sunset, right from noon. Unfortunately, France is too far away for that. But on your tiny planet, my little prince, all you need do is move your chair a few steps. You can see the day end and the twilight falling whenever you like.
"One day," you said to me,
"I saw the sunset forty-four times!"
And a little later you added:
"You know - one loves the sunset, when one is so sad."
"Were you so sad, then?" I asked, "on the day of the forty-four sunsets?"
But the little prince made no reply.

Spanish Point - Colours

Memories are to friendships
what colours are to the sunset.

Spanish Point - Astronaut's View

The sun truly "comes up like thunder," and it sets just as fast. Each sunrise and sunset lasts only a few seconds. But in that time you see at least eight different bands of color come and go, from a brilliant red to the brightest and deepest blue. And you see sixteen sunrises and sixteen sunsets every day you're in space. No sunrise or sunset is ever the same.
Joseph Allen, USA

Spanish Point - Meeting of the waves

I look at the sunset
I look at the stars
I see so much beauty,
But when I look at you
I see so much more.
You surpass any wonder,
Any star, any sunset
I would walk a million miles
Just to look into your eyes
Just to say I love you!

Spanish Point - Mastery of Nature

Science will never be able to reduce the value of a sunset to arithmetic. Nor can it reduce friendship to formula. Laughter and love, pain and loneliness, the challenge of beauty and truth: these will always surpass the scientific mastery of nature.
Louis Orr

Spanish Point - Life

What is life?
It is the little shadow
which runs across the grass
and loses itself in the sunset.

Ross Castle - Evening - Time for storytelling

The Weaver's Don and the Giant of the White Hill

Before evening a great shower came, and the boy ran for shelter to a large oak-tree. When he got near the tree his foot slipped, the ground opened, and down he went through the earth till he came to another country. When he was in the other country he put on the cloak of darkness and went ahead like a blast of wind, and never stopped till he saw a castle in the distance; and soon he was there.

Ross Castle - Light and Shadow

There are only two faces to existence
- birth and death -
and life survives them both,
just so sunrise and sunset
are not essentially different:
it all depends on whether one is facing east or west.
Joy Mills

Ross Castle - Goodbye

Even though we said goodbye,
remember, we watch the same sunset.
